Elective Course # 10: the Life of John Henry Cardinal Newman
This class will study and discuss the spiritual and personal growth of John Henry Cardinal
Newman during his happy childhood as a student and later as a student, then professor,
at Oxford University. It will note especially his willingness to grow spiritually through
reading and study of the Fathers of the Church. Eventually this meant his leaving
the Church of England (which he loved) and becoming a Roman Catholic -- a Church
which earlier he had been convinced was in error. We will note his difficulties and his
ongoing search for truth as a Catholic layman, priest, and toward the end of his life, as a
Cardinal in the Catholic Church. Cardinal Newman will probably be beatified by the Church
in 2010.

Begins: Thursday, February 4, 2010
