The Diocese of Corpus Christi welcomes you to a six-week video retreat entitled Growing in Grace: Lenten Reflections with Bishop Mulvey. Beginning Ash Wednesday and continuing every Sunday during Lent, Bishop Mulvey will offer his guidance and reflection on Lenten traditions, such as prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. He also will reflect upon how God can transform our hearts in preparation for the solemn sacrifice of Holy Week, leading to the glorious redemption of Easter Sunday. Lenten resources mentioned throughout the series will be available right here as well as the audio versions of each video are available as well. There is also material available in Spanish. Welcome and may God Bless you and your families. Click to view a list of Fish Frys and other Lenten activities in our diocese.
Jesus is risen! God has conquered death. God has conquered sin. With the Resurrection, there is now the possibility for hope. Many people today live without hope. Today, we proclaim there is hope. Many people live without peace. But Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, gives us peace because we know that He is with us, and there is hope for eternal life with Him.
Bishop Michael Mulvey invites you to participate in all of the liturgies this Holy Week at your parish or at the Corpus Christi Cathedral - to be together in Christ. Set your schedules. Week 6 Resources: |
FORGIVENESS - TEST OF LOVELove is the very center of Christian life. Jesus said many things about love. He told us to love one another. He also told us to love our enemy. Forgiveness is the real test of loving. It is the test of being Christian. It is the test of being human. We all have times when we are called upon to forgive, yet, we feel we cannot. As we approach Holy week, let us take steps toward reconciling ourselves with others, especially those we find hardest to love and hardest to forgive. Week 5 Resources: |
WORD OF GOD - MAKES US ALIVEDuring the Fourth Sunday of Lent, Bishop Mulvey reflects upon the Word of God and how Jesus is present not only in the Eucharist but also alive in the Word of God. In the Word, Jesus offers us freedom from our often selfish behavior and leads us to truth that makes us alive and enables us to experience the promise of new life, while gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves. Many people say, "I'm not sure who I am. I don't know where to go. I don't know who to listen to." There's much confusion. We are looking for the truth, and there is only one truth - it is Jesus Christ. If we have faith that God sent his Son as his Word, as the truth, we will find Truth in Him. Week 4 Resources: |
ALMSGIVING - GIVING OF ONESELFDuring the Third Sunday of Lent, Bishop Mulvey discusses almsgiving and how essentially it means “to love.” When reflecting upon almsgiving, it may be associated with tithing and being a good steward of talent and treasure. Yet, from a deeper perspective, it is rooted in giving of oneself. Almsgiving also is a call for us to step beyond ourselves, which leads us to a more wholehearted experience of offering ourselves to others. The greatest almsgiving is when Jesus gave himself to us on the cross. Before that, God gave Jesus to us. Thus, almsgiving can be described as giving of ourselves. To give who we are, to give our time, is true almsgiving. Week 3 Resources: |
PRAYER - OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GODDuring the Second Sunday of Lent, Bishop Mulvey shares how prayer is our connection with God. It is what makes us human. Sometimes, we may find that we pray out of habit but not from the heart. Every human is created in God’s image and has the desire to pray. Anyone who looks beyond oneself comes to realize we do not have the ability to do everything. For example, when one is ill, one realizes they cannot cure themselves. So prayer is essential. Week 2 Resources: |
FASTING - MOVING AWAY FROM WHAT DISTORTS MY LIFEDuring the First Sunday of Lent, Bishop Mulvey discusses the connection between Lent and fasting. He shares how Lent is a time when we look at the temptations of our life and how those temptations, in many ways, distort who we are: the simplicity and beauty of who we are created to be. Sin disables a person’s personality and life. Lent provides an opportunity to move away from what distorts our life. Week 1 Resources: |
