Since there was no residence for the Bishop in Corpus Christi, Bishop Verdaguer moved to Laredo where he had relatives and established his residence there. It was at his invitation that the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word came to Corpus Christi to administer Spohn Hospital.Through a similar invitation, the Religious Sisters of Mercy came to Laredo and began working there, leading to the establishment of Mercy Hospital.
