Maria Guadalupe B. Tamayo, mother of Bishop James Tamayo of the Diocese of Laredo, was called to her eternal rest on Friday, June 24, in Laredo. To all who knew her, she was a loyal and trusted friend.
She was born in Berclair, Texas to George and Mercedes Borrego on Sept. 27, 1921. Being the eldest of the girls, she helped her father raise her sisters and brothers after her mother’s early passing.
Always one who enjoyed sports, she joined the all-female baseball league in South Texas akin to the story recounted in one of her favorite movies “A League of Their Own”. During World War II, she worked for the US Government in support of the military. In 1946, she met and married Antonio P. Tamayo. In their 69 years of marriage, they were rarely apart.
She is survived by her children, Bishop Tamayo and daughter Mercy Barrera of Corpus Christi; grandchildren Yvonne and Shawn Dick of Round Rock, Leslie Barrera of Houston and Michael Barrera of Corpus Christi; her two great-granddaughters Katie and Calleigh Dick of Round Rock; her sisters Amparo Torrez and Connie Maldonado; a brother, George (Connie) Borrego, Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Marta Michel of Baytown and Lola Lodrique of Fort Worth; and many nieces and nephews.
A woman of great faith, she served as an officer of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas in support of religious vocations.
The family will receive condolences on Tuesday, June 28, at Seaside Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 4357 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christ from 5-9 p.m. with a Vigil for the deceased and Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 29, at 10 a.m. at St. Phillip the Apostle Catholic Church, 3513 Cimarron Road, Corpus Christi. Rite of Committal and Internment will immediately follow the Mass at the family plot in Seaside Memorial Park.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Laredo on Friday, July 1, at noon at San Agustin Cathedral.
