The excitement was palatable for students and teachers as they eased into their first day of the 2022-2023 school year in the Diocese of Corpus Christi. Most schools started their first day of school on Aug. 11, except for Incarnate Word Academy (IWA) elementary, middle and high school levels, which began on Aug. 8.
At each school, students were greeted back in a variety of ways.
At St. John Paul II High School, Bishop Emeritus Edmond Carmody, the principal, Father Peter Martinez and chaplain, Father Charles Silvas, greeted students with a handshake and a prayer. At. St. Pius X elementary students were welcomed by Izzy the Islander, the Islander cheerleaders, the Hooks mascot Sammy the seagull and their own Joey the Blue Jay.
St. John Paul Centurion cheerleaders cheered on students at Bishop Garriga Middle School and St. Elizabeth in Alice, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy displayed outdoor yard art signs, and St. Patrick and other schools welcomed their students with indoor displays.
The Catholic Schools in the diocese have 13 successful schools, including those in Alice, Rockport, Robstown, and Corpus Christi: two high schools, four middle schools (two middle school campuses and two elementary schools with grades up to middle school), and seven elementary schools.
