Five Incarnate Word Academy high school students will be competing in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) State Tennis Tournament from April 24-25 in Waco.
Senior Paul Freeman will be competing in boys singles, and sophomore Mary Hubert, junior Courtney Ramirez, junior Annie Rodriguez and sophomore Claire Weis will be competing in girls doubles.
Hubert and Ramirez came in second place at the pre-district tournament, but they were able to rebound in the district tournament, beating Hyde Park to win the girls doubles district championship. This is their first year playing doubles together.
Rodriguez and Weis finished third at district. This is also their first year playing doubles together.
“I’m really optimistic that they can make a strong run at the state tournament,” IWA Tennis Coach Cory Brooks said.
Freeman, who suffered a right hand injury mid-season, captured first place March 23 at the pre-district tournament in Austin. He finished in second place April 10 at the district tournament, which also took place in Austin.
“I’m proud that Paul will get a chance to compete in the state tournament,” Brooks said. “He's had a great season so far, winning first at the Tuloso-Midway Spring Invite and finishing second at the Calallen Varsity tournament.”
“Now he's fired up and ready to go at state,” Brooks said.
