A solemn mass celebrated by Bishop Michael Mulvey, with a Korean choir from Houston, followed by delicious Korean food and cake, took place on Sunday in St. Paul the Apostle Church in Corpus Christi. “Even after many years of living in the United States, celebrating Mass in our native language is one of the most precious moments of our faith life,” said Jason Leo Lee, Chairperson of the Corpus Christi Korean Catholic Community. The Korean Catholic community started back in 1987 with three Korean families. A priest visiting from Houston celebrated the first Mass in Korean in 1989. In 1991, the Diocese of Busan, South Korea, started sending a Korean priest to the Diocese of San Antonio to serve the Korean community. He visited Corpus Christi once a month to celebrate Mass in their native language. This continued until the Covid pandemic disrupted everything. Now Fr. Kim, a priest at Korean Martyrs Catholic Parish in San Antonio, will continue this tradition.
