As part of National Vocations Awareness Week from November 3 to 9, the Office of Vocations in the Diocese of Corpus Christi presented the Andrew Dinner on Tuesday, November 5, at the Msgr. Shirley Youth Center at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Twenty-five young men from various parishes across the diocese were accompanied by their respective pastors to enjoy an evening of fellowship and discussion about exploring the vocation to the priesthood, led by Bishop Michael Mulvey.
“There are many different vocations, and God is calling all of us,” said Bob Cummings, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Corpus Christi. “It could be to holy matrimony, the priesthood, or consecrated life, but we are all called by God, and the Andrew Dinner is a way for young men to begin discerning that call.”
The evening began with prayer. This was a beautiful opportunity for attendees to speak with and listen to Jesus during adoration and reflection on scripture led by Bishop Mulvey. The “Holy Half Hour” was followed by dinner, during which a priest sat at each table and shared stories about their vocations and experiences.
Dinner included a video presentation from Deacon Javier Ebertowski, who described his personal discernment and eventual vocation to the priesthood as “the greatest adventure” of his life. He added that answering the call to the priesthood has led him to not only travel the world but also to trust that God will never be outdone in generosity.
“I feel that God may be calling me to more in my life,” said Juan Villegas from St. Philip the Apostle Parish. “I hope to gain more clarity and direction through the priests and the others I will meet here at this event.”
After dinner, Bishop Michael Mulvey took center stage to offer remarks and reflections. He recalled his early days as a priest, how his ministry led him to become a bishop, and his encounters with Popes Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict, and Francis. Bishop Mulvey answered questions, allowing even more dialogue among the young men and priests.
Bishop Mulvey also discussed how the discernment process means listening less to one’s voice and focusing more on what God is saying. Bishop Mulvey concluded the evening with encouraging words for these potential priests.
“Talk to God, and do not be afraid,” said Bishop Mulvey. “Say ‘let me want more what you want than what I want,’ then let go and let God guide you.”
