While we have not had a storm impact the Coastal Bend in a significant way so far, many storms impacting Texas shores take place in September and October; therefore, it is important to stay vigilant and make sure you have a plan in case there is a storm, said Dr. Philippe Tissot, Associate Professor in the College of Science and Engineering and Associate Director of the Conrad Blucher Institute, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Atlantic hurricane season will end on Nov. 30.
While the United States has yet to experience a hurricane in the Atlantic this year, several tropical storms–Andrea, Barry, Dorian, Erin–have made an appearance. Most recently, tropical storm Fernand impacted the Coastal Bend through flooding on area beaches.
A majority of the time, the area is actually impacted by small storms or large storms landing far away from the shores of the Coastal Bend.
Recent research shows that as the Texas coast is slowly subsiding and it is believed that the impact of these small storms will increase significantly as the century progresses brining with them small but increasingly frequent flooding events, Dr. Tissot said.
