Nov. 27 was a historic Sunday for English-speaking Roman Catholics, who began using a long-awaited and more accurate Mass translation. The change, however, involved its share of awkward moments. “I think everybody experienced some awkwardness or stumbling,” Father Daniel Merz, associate director of the U.S. bishops' Secretariat for Divine Worship, said.

After the switch to a new Mass translation, old liturgical books should be respectfully buried, either intact or after being burned, according to the U.S. bishops.

More than 700 affiliate leaders, individual members, Catholic leaders, exhibitors and friends of the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) met Nov. 9-12, at the Chicago Marriott Downtown to reinvigorate and expand their commitment to spirituality, leadership and service through inspired speakers, liturgical celebrations and thoughtful reflection on best practices for evangelization and social justice. The convention theme was “Campaign for Human Dignity—Love in Action.”

More than 500 students, staff and guests gathered at the Pontifical North American College in Rome today to celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Among them was Eric Chapa, a seminarian with the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

The 26th international conference organized by the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care has as its theme: "Health Pastoral Care, Serving Life in the Light of the Magisterium of Blessed John Paul II", and is due to be held in the Vatican from Nov. 24-26.

Publishing a monthly “newspaper” has its challenges. First, it is hard to report “news” when you come out once a month. The events you report on are very often dated or premature. It is only occasionally when you get to report an event in a semi-timely manner.

Last month, an advisory committee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta recommended that nine to 12 year old boys be vaccinated against the human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus transmitted through sexual contact. The goal of the recommendations was to prevent cancers caused by HPV, such as certain cancers of the digestive tract.

More than 400 Catholic school administrators, teachers and staff will gather at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in Corpus Christi on Nov. 18 for the annual Diocesan Catholic Educators Conference. Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey will celebrate Mass at 8:30 a.m. to open the conference.

On Nov. 19, Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey will rededicate Our Lady of Refuge church, which has stood at the entrance to Refugio for more than 100 years. The small Victorian Gothic building has become an icon of the town, and is celebrated for its beauty and peaceful interior.

St. Patrick Mission is one of the oldest in the state, having begun in the colony of San Patricio de Hibernia in 1830. Two years earlier, the Irish empresarios James McGloin and John McMullen contracted with the Mexican government to settle 200 families in an area on the Nueces River. Their Catholic faith was required but their fluency in Spanish, learned from their Spanish wives, undoubtedly helped them secure the grant. McMullen was married to a widow, Esther Espadas Cummings, and McGloin married her daughter Eliza.

At least early in Jesus’ public life, the home of Peter and Andrew seems to function as a center for much of Jesus’ public activity. However, in these early accounts, Andrew is a rather shadowy figure in relation to Peter.
