Bishop Michael Mulvey has asked that a special collection be taken at all Masses in the Diocese of Corpus Christi this weekend, May 30-31, to assist the many families and residents who have lost loved ones, homes, businesses and possessions to recent floods.

Scouts from all over the Diocese of Corpus Christi received their religious emblems and scouting awards at the Religious Awards Ceremony on May 3 at Corpus Christi Cathedral. Bishop Michael Mulvey celebrated Mass and presented emblems and awards to scouts and scoutmasters, with help from scout chaplain Father Paul Hesse.

The Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious (CMSWR) will continue the celebration of the Year of Consecrated Life with a two-week course of study for religious from July 6-17 entitled “Spouses of Christ, Daughters of the Church.” It will take place at the Pax Christi Retreat Center in Corpus Christi.

Msgr. Morgan Rowsome, who served pastor of St. Peter, Prince of the Apostles Parish in Corpus Christi for many years before his retirement, passed away Friday, May 21, as the result of a one-car accident on Interstate 37 as he was returning to his home in San Antonio from Corpus Christi.

The city of Corpus Christi cheered and mothers raised their babies to Our Lady of Guadalupe as she travelled the parade route at the 2015 Buccaneer Illuminated Night Parade on May 2. The Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops this week reaffirmed its concern about proposed legislation that would permit the open carry of handguns in public areas, particularly proposals that would allow weapons to be carried into churches, schools, college campuses and hospitals. Law enforcement officials statewide worry about whether they could distinguish citizens from perpetrators.

The varsity softball team is advancing to the final four in the TAPPS State Softball Tournament. The Lady Angels will play Houston Lutheran South on Thursday, May 14 at 9 a.m. at the Waco ISD Sports Complex in Waco.

May is "Elder Abuse Prevention Month," a time to learn about elder abuse and what you can do to help. It is everyone's business to help prevent abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of those who are elderly or have disabilities.

The most emotional experience for me so far occurred last Friday night at the San Antonio downtown Greyhound bus station. Alyssa Weinfurtner and Priscilla Avila, volunteers at the South Texas Human Rights Center, and I showed up randomly. We hoped to join other volunteers and to learn from them how to care for the mothers and children who are released on bond from the Dilley Detention Center and dropped off at the bus station in a van from Dilley each weekday night.

The St. John Paul II High School STEM Club hosted its second VEX robotics competition on May 2. The Centurion STEM team took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the competiton. The competition is intended to increase awareness and help educate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Incarnate Word Academy Varsity Baseball Team buddied up with members of the Padre Little League Challenger Division on April 29 at the National Little League field. The IWA baseball team members encouraged special-needs players to bat and make plays for themselves.
