School leaders assembled at St. John Paul II High School on Aug. 30 to learn hand on approaches and applications for the effective management of schools. Participants studied a variety of modules including student registration, report cards, progress reports, tuition billing, student histories, student data, parent portal for communication, and student data and demographics.
“When I first retired, I wasn’t sure what to do with my time,” Navidad Luna said while volunteering for the Red Cross assisting Louisiana flood victims. “Several people suggested that I go to the local senior citizens center to meet people and pass time. One day while there, I met a man wearing a Red Cross shirt. I approached him and asked why he was wearing that shirt. He replied that he was a Red Cross volunteer and had just finished working on a local disaster response.”
Incarnate Word Academy High School Level students collected alms this past Lenten season to contribute to IWA’s Solidarity Fund which is used for various mission and service projects throughout the school year.
Sister J. Emilia Villarreal, OSU, died peacefully on Aug. 23 at Sunset Care Center in Union, Mo. Her life journey included that of a mother and a member of the Ursuline Sisters.
The Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School Crusaders played an intra-squad scrimmage on Aug. 27 at St. John Paul II High School football field. The teams wore their new uniforms courtesy of Mira's Sports and More. In addition they wore new gold helmets, "which mirror the Notre Dame team," Athletic director and coach Jack Tanny said.
Bishop Michael Mulvey of the Diocese of Corpus Christi has called that a portion of the diocese's annual Disaster Relief Collection scheduled for Sept. 17-18 be used to assist victims of the recent flooding in Louisiana. The floodwaters have claimed numerous lives, destroyed thousands of homes and left thousands of families feeling isolated and fearful.
KLUX 89.5HD is holding its annual on-the air, fall "Pledge Fest" fundraiser beginning today, Aug. 29. The two-day event will feature KLUX air personalities and guests making on-air appeals for support and taking phone pledges for the listener supported station. The goal of the two-day event is $16,000.
Incarnate Word Academy Elementary Level families attended a Family Fun Fiesta on Aug. 19 at the school’s playground. Families enjoyed extra playground time as well as great food from food trucks on site such as the Munchies Bus, Dazed & B’Qued, and Mix Grill. The evening also featured a DJ and ice cream for all children.
Incarnate Word Academy held their 10th Annual Angel Mile Run on Aug.19 at the school’s training site located at Our Lady of Corpus Christi. The training site, which includes a one-mile trail, offers a safe training environment for student-athletes to run on. Students from IWA’s Elementary, Middle, and High School Levels took on this one-mile challenge along with families, faculty, staff, friends, and alumni.
Therese Recinella, Ph.D., director of the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis for the Diocese of Corpus Christi, presented two days of formation and training to some 100 individuals involved in RCIA (Rite of Christian initiation of Adults) and religious education. The training took place Aug. 23-25 at Out Lady of Corpus Christi and the Chancery.
Over thirty eligible students and community members from St. John Paul II High School gave blood to the Coastal Bend Blood Center on Aug. 23. The blood units collected at this blood drive will potentially save many lives in the area.
Bishop Michael Mulvey presided over the 17th annual "Liturgy to Begin the School Year" where over 700 students, staff and teachers from all over the diocese gathered for Mass at Corpus Christi Cathedral on Aug. 24. Students proudly displayed their school's banner and served as altar servers, lectors, choir members and participated in the procession of gifts during offertory. Priests from several Catholic school parishes concelebrated Mass with Bishop Mulvey.
Feeding America, a national hunger advocacy organization, has designated September as National Hunger Action Month. We are a nation of a thousand plenties with our abundance of food, yet one in six children experiences hunger every day.
Father Michael Burke entered into eternal life on Sunday, Aug. 21. He was 92. A funeral Mass was celebrated in the St. Jude Chapel at Most Precious Blood Church where Fr. Burke served for several years. Please Father Burke in your prayers.
Parents at Incarnate Word Academy got an opportunity to be a student again as the school invited them to attend their children’s classrooms this week. Parents met faculty members as they attended their child’s first period class for approximately 6-8 minutes.
Thirty administrative assistants from Catholic schools from throughout the Diocese of Corpus Christi are receiving training on school systems management. The training is being held today, Aug. 23, at the St. John Paul II High School computer lab. This is the first time this training has been offered.

On Aug. 14, Bishop Michael Mulvey celebrated a Mass at the Corpus Christi Cathedral in which he recognized the Burse Club for their contributions to help educate seminarians from the Diocese of Corpus Christi. The Burse Club was founded by the Corpus Christi Diocesan Council of Catholic Women to give people an opportunity to help the diocese pay for the education of our seminarians.
