Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Portland completed a women's ACTS retreat on Sept. 22-25 with pastor Msgr. Mark Chamberlin serving as spiritual director. Cindy Longoria directed the retreat and was assisted by co-directors Lori Mota and Tessie Sturgeon.
This year's Middle School Youth Spectacular, held on Saturday, Sept. 24, took on a special meaning because it fell during the Year of Mercy called by Pope Francis. Some 350 young people representing 23 parishes in the Diocese of Corpus Christi participated in a pilgrimage walk from the American Bank Center to the Corpus Christi Cathedral, entering through the Holy Doors to attend the Saturday Vigil Mass.
An exhibit honoring St. Teresa of Calcutta is on display at Holy Cross from the end of September through the month of October. Louis Bazaldua and Divina Galan created the exhibit.
Pro-life activist Manuel Garcia shared his stories of St. Teresa of Calcutta at an assembly and prayer service held at Ss. Cyril and Methodius School pavilion on Sept. 2. Garcia showed students a rosary that was given to him by Mother Teresa years ago as well as a book signed by her.
Pope Francis has named Msgr. Robert Coerver as bishop of the Diocese of Lubbock, Texas, and accepted the resignation of Bishop Plácido Rodríguez. Msgr. Coerver serves as a priest in the Diocese of Dallas.

Nearly 700 women leaders from around the country attended this year's National Council of Catholic Women annual national convention in Indianapolis, Indiana Sept. 7-10. Founded on March 4, 1920, the NCCW celebrated its 96th year with a convention theme of “Catholic Women: Instruments of Mercy.”
Catholic Charities' Community Wellness and Family Outreach program received an Honorable Mention award from the Department of Family and Protective Services' Partners in Prevention for their collaboration with employees of Frost Bank of Corpus Christi. The partnership between Catholic Charities and Frost Bank employees provides "birthday parties in a box" for children enrolled in the Parents as Teachers (PAT) program.

The Mariological Society of America will hold a conference at the Schoenstatt Center in Lamar on May 16–19, 2017. The theme of the conference will be the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Sacraments and will study the Blessed Virgin’s relationship to the sacraments of Christian initiation, including baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist.

But the keynote speaker really said it to make a point: abuse is not just a women’s issue. “All forms of abuse should be everyone’s issue,” Rivers said.

Nine St. John Paul II High School seniors were commissioned Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Immaculate Conception Chapel on Sept. 21 during the weekly Mass. They will be able to distribute communion for the first time at the Freshman Retreat on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Abby Johnson, a one-time director of a Planned Parenthood Clinic, was the guest speaker at the 27th annual Celebration for Life Banquet held at Royal Mansion in Corpus Christi on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Johnson's desire to help women in need was the motivation that both led her to a career with Planned Parenthood—America's largest abortion provider—and caused her to flee the organization and become an outspoken advocate for the pro-life movement.
Area judges, lawyers and other court officials gathered at the Corpus Christi Cathedral on Sept. 15 to take part in the annual Red Mass that marks the start of the judicial year. In his homily, Bishop Michael Mulvey called on the Holy Spirit to "invoke wisdom and light to all who serve in the legal profession."
The diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis held its first of three Faith Educators' Workshops at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Corpus Christi on Saturday, Sept. 17. Father Sam Medley, SOLT addressed some 165 catechists on the types of prayer, the spirituality of the catechist and prayer in the catechetical process.
