The Office of Catholic Schools begins the school year with a Spiritual Day for all the teachers throughout the Diocese of Corpus Christi on Aug. 8. The event was held in the Cafetorium at St. John Paul High School. The event began with the celebration of Mass by newly ordained Father Charles Silvas, who happens to be an alumnus of St. John Paul High School.

Six sisters from the Pax Christi Institute were honored at a Mass and reception for 50 and 25 years of religious life. The event was held at the Pax Christi Liturgical Retreat Center on Aug. 3.

Our Eucharistic celebrations last month were a great success and triumph in celebrating the Lord’s promise: “I am with you always…” I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of you who assisted in the organization and execution of the events and for being a part of this very special moment in the life of our diocese. It proved to be a celebration that was filled with many blessings.
Sister Maria Luisa Peña, 87, of Kingsville passed away July 31 in Kingsville, Texas. She was born on Aug. 25, 1934, in Robstown to Isidoro and Concepcion Peña.

Parishioners at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Portland welcomed Bishop Michael Mulvey as he celebrated Mass and blessed the newly renovated Perpetual Adoration Chapel on July 16. “It was a special day for our parish community because not only were we celebrating the 30th anniversary and rededication of our Perpetual Adoration Chapel,” said Norma Ochoa, a parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel said. “It was also the Feast Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,”

Volunteer educators from throughout the Diocese gathered recently at St. Philip the Apostle Church for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for a Level I Part One formation course in preparation for the new school year. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a unique approach to the religious formation of children, which assists the child in encountering God and nurtures their budding relationship.
It's been a long road to recovery after the destruction caused during Hurricane Harvey, and we are grateful to God that repairs of buildings damaged are now underway and will bring new beginnings to diocesan parishes soon.
July has been very active for the sports-minded students at Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School Sports Camps. The camps varied from practicing basketball for boys and girls and volleyball in the school’s gymnasium and football on the Bishop Carmody Field.
Bishop Garriga Middle Preparatory School Cheerleaders (Crusaders) hosted a successful Kiddie Cheer Camp on July 26 in the school’s gymnasium. Over 40 girls practiced kicks, chants, dances and cheers under the supervision of the Crusaders’ cheerleaders and their sponsor and math teacher, Lisa Hernandez.
Most Precious Blood Parish recently hosted “Discovery Mission” Catholic Vocation Bible School. Throughout the week, about 30 children in grades 1-5 learned about marriage, priesthood and religious life through lessons, music, arts and crafts and meaningful prayer time.
Catechists who serve in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, (CGS) often ponder, share and wonder about atrium experiences together. We are frequently reminded of who is the real teacher, for the children and for us. Yesterday I was blessed with such a story.
